Spices and herbs are capable of much more than just enhancing food flavor. They can boost the immune system and fight cancer by preventing it.

Here are six methods to add flavor to your meals while maintaining good health.

1) Turmeric: This yellow curry powder, which contains the active polyphenol curcumin, has been demonstrated to slow the growth of cancer cells. As an anti-inflammatory, it is also.

Tip: Combine with olive oil and black pepper (piperine) to stimulate and aid in absorption. It can be used to soups, sauces, and stews as well as used as a dry rub.

2) Ginger: Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics help prevent cancer. Additionally, it can be an appetite stimulant and is used as a natural cure for nausea and upset stomach.

Tip: For a calming tea, steep a few thin slices in hot water for ten minutes.

3) Cayenne Pepper: This spicy pepper contains capsaicin, an antioxidant with potent anti-inflammatory and weight-loss properties. Beta-carotene is also present in cayenne. It is known to be poisonous to cancer cells and aids in stopping their proliferation.

4) Saffron: Although this spice is the priciest, it has a powerful flavor. It has crocins, water-soluble carotenoids that may slow the spread of cancer and the formation of tumors.

5) Oregano: The plant with the highest concentration of antioxidants reduces the spread of cancer and encourages apoptosis (cell death). It has antibacterial qualities and acts as a natural sterilant.

Tips: A helpful hint is to use oregano when marinating meat to help prevent the formation of the heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that are produced when meat is cooked at high temperatures.

6) Garlic: The most effective anti-cancer spice is a member of the allium family, which also includes onions, shallots, scallions, leeks, and chives. Garlic supports the immune system’s ability to fight off illnesses like the flu and the common cold. It also slows the development of cancer cells.

Tips: Remember to “chop and stop” when chopping a clove, letting it sit for 10 minutes before using it to allow allicin (an enzyme) to form. Take one clove daily.
